Introduction
Although everyone in Munich can speak standard Hochdeutsch (High German), there is also a distinctive dialect known as Münchener Bayrisch, which distinguishes the real locals from the Zuag’roasten (immigrants). Like many German dialects, it is almost incomprehensible to visitors from outside the region – including those from other parts of the country. Even when speaking Hochdeutsch, Müncheners have a strong accent and use particular words or phrases that are peculiar to the city. As in the rest of the country, young people and those involved in tourism or international business are likely to speak good English.
